Years of work in sustainability and the invisible economics of nature led to his appointment to head the United Nations’ “Green Economy Initiative” and write their landmark report “Towards a Green Economy” (2011), and to lead the G8+5-commissioned study “TEEB” (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, 2008-2010). Harkishan Surjeeth Kumar
SIFF-RySS Fellow
Harkishan Surjeeth Kumar is a postgraduate researcher in Plant Biology, specialising in Sustainable Crop Production. His work sits at the intersection of plant immunity, crop ecology, and natural farming. He holds a Masters degree in Abiotic and Biotic Interactions of Cultivated Crops from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden, and a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Sciences from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar, India. His thesis investigated neighbour-modulated immunity in wheat against Fusarium sp. — asking a deceptively simple question: can the right mix of genotypes do what chemicals currently do?
Hands-on experience in organic paddy cultivation deepened his understanding of how management decisions shape yield stability, transforming his interest in natural farming from academic curiosity into a full research commitment. He aspires to build crop production systems that are ecologically grounded, low-input, and built to last— for both the soil and the farmer.
